Kew inspires caretakers

South Neighbourhood’s Estate Services Team returned from an away-day at Kew Gardens where they were inspired to achieve the best possible standards of horticultural excellence.

The physical environment on our estates plays a significant role when it comes to delivering places where people want to live.

The Estate Services team have an important role ensuring that the environment is of the best possible standard.

When it came to looking at how they could best achieve that standard they went to a centre of horticultural excellence to seek inspiration.

The away-day at Kew gardens took them on a guided tour of the gardens with bird’s eye views of the landscape from the canopy walkway. The afternoon was spent looking at areas of personal interest: not only planting schemes but practical projects such as composting and lawn maintenance that could be adapted to their patches.

Chris Rooney, Estates Services Supervisor, commented, "Not all our caretakers are great garden enthusiasts, but they all have a real desire to improve the schemes for which they have responsibility. At Kew they had access to a wide range of environments from hard landscapes to glasshouses and everyone found something that they could take away and try to develop."
