L&Q supported a local festival last Saturday by opening up an ecology area on one of its estates to the public.
As part of the weekend’s Wandle Valley Festival, and through L&Q’s partnership with the council-run Sutton Ecology Centre, local families were able to explore pond life from a pond-dipping platform on the Wandle Valley estate in Sutton. Children and parents learnt about all the nature on their doorsteps, energy saving and wildlife gardening. Tenancy Services Officer Helene Bond ran a quiz and sunflower planting for the children.
The River Wandle flows through the London boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, Merton and Wandsworth, where it joins the Thames. The annual Wandle Valley Festival, supported by over 20 ecology, heritage and local authority organisations, offers free activities along the riverbank to celebrate the river’s history and ecology.
L&Q’s South West Thames Region manages around 200 homes and a community centre on the Wandle Valley estate. It was until recently the focus of a project run by L&Q, with funding from the National Lottery, to help young people and volunteers to develop and manage their own community projects. This has now been handed on to a local youth organisation.
