Young residents organise rip-roaring fun day

Nearly 100 residents flocked to a family fun day in Hackney recently which was organised by young people from the local area.

The event was organised by 12 young people from the New Kingshold Estate, which became part of L&Q through the recent Ujima merger.

Members of the Chatham-Victoria youth committee - supported by local community development organisation CityZEN and part-funded by L&Q – have been working hard to ensure that local young people have a genuine say about what happens in their area.

The youth committee, which involves young people from the New Kingshold, Trelawney, Frampton Park and Morningside estates, has been active for three years and regularly meets with the Tenants and Residents’ Association, the landlords and other stakeholders. They have forged strong partnerships and really demonstrated that young people are willing to get involved.

The family fun day was a huge success and a chance for all members of the community to come together and take part in games, sports, T-shirt printing and enjoy a sense of unity.

L&Q resident Sarah Smith from the youth committee addressed the community and talked about her role as a peer mediator and how important it was for the youth committee to be directly involved with events such as family fun days

A partnership between London and Quadrant Housing Trust, Southern Housing Group, Sanctuary Hereward, CityZEN and the youth committee have just applied for funding to provide regular activities at New Kingshold in line with the findings of the consultation.”
