Haggerston Areal

Background to the regeneration project at Haggerston West and Kingsland estate.

Residents of the Haggerston West and Kingsland Estates have been campaigning for the regeneration of their estates for many years. Some residents have been campaigning for improvement works on the estates since the late eighties. This finally resulted in the lobbying of Housing Minister Yvette Cooper, M.P, who visited the estate, at the request of residents in November 2006.

London & Quadrant’s involvement dates back to 2003 when we were invited to compete to become the preferred partner to work with residents and Hackney Council to develop plans for the regeneration of the estates.

London and Quadrant won the bid, and the work to develop plans began in earnest.

L & Q have been working with the London Borough of Hackney and central government to develop the proposals. In November last year gap funding of £8.5 million was agreed, which was the final step needed to make the plans for redevelopment happen.

The proposal

The proposals for the estate involve:

  • redeveloping the whole estate of 480 flats over two phases
  • rebuilding a mixture of affordable units with shared ownership and sale units making 761 units on the redeveloped site

All current secure tenants will be able to come back to the area if they wish. Leaseholders also have several options including the opportunity for residential leaseholders to buy a share of a new home on the estate.
