Residents get fruity at fun days!

Healthy eating days

With summer fast approaching (hopefully!) many L&Q residents have been thinking about keeping fit and healthy eating.

There was more than just apples and pears as residents on an East London estate turned out in force for a fun day recently aimed at encouraging exercise and healthy eating.

People young and old from the Brooklands Green Estate in Romford enjoyed everything from belly dancing to the finest fruit and veg at the event.

The day was organised and funded by L&Q, Brooklands Green Tenants Association, the local Primary Care Trust and the London Borough of Havering.

The idea was to get people thinking about eating healthily and find out what health and fitness events residents would like to see on the estate.

Everyone got £60 worth of vouchers to spend on things like healthy food, tai-chi classes, yoga, Indian dancing, football, and lessons on how to make smoothies.

Lee Heckett from L&Q said: “Everyone seemed to have a great day, we were lucky with the weather and hopefully people took away some ideas about how they can eat more healthily and keep fit.”

Also focusing on healthy living, were residents of St Matthew’s estate in Brixton. They got tips on everything from cancer prevention and healthier lifestyles to sexual health and quitting smoking at a recent health promotion day.

HEALTHY EATING

Local charities and health organisations were on hand to take residents’ blood pressure and sugar level readings, as well as giving general information and advice. Visitors also had the chance to try Tai Chi and aerobics, as well as a relaxing Indian Head Massage.

Residents left with bags of free fruit and vegetables, all aimed at encouraging healthy eating, and hopefully some of them will be experimenting in the kitchen.

The residents also completed a questionnaire about their health needs that will be used to develop future projects aimed at improving their health.

The day was sponsored by L&Q, Tower Homes, Presentation and Lambeth Council, along with construction contractors Mulalley.
