Sponging

The use of a sponge when decorating can give various patterns and strength of colours. It really is a case of producing an effect that suits you. By using pastel shades you can create a soft hazy look - by using bolder colours you can create something more striking. This is what you will need before you get cracking:

• emulsion paint in your choice of colours, including mid sheen or silk for the background
• roller or paint brush
• cardboard for testing your techniques on
• a natural sponge
• bucket of clean water and some cleaning rags
• disposable gloves

Now you’re all ready to go but don’t forget to cover the carpet! This is how to “sponge”:

• prepare the walls and paint on the background colour using two coats of mid sheen or silk emulsion and allow to dry
• stir your paint and dampen the sponge with water
• dip the sponge in the paint but don’t over fill it – dap off any surplus
• now dap it on your card to have a practice and when satisfied
• pat the sponge gently on the wall
• keep changing direction or twist the sponge to avoid creating the same effect
• sponge the corners using a small piece to finish off.

Tips – wait for the paint to dry before adding more colours or before sponging on the background colour to cover a mistake – wash the sponge out frequently.
