Be water wise

Running TapLifestyle choices, population growth and climate change are placing increasing demands on our water supplies. It’s important that we do not take this precious resource for granted and that we all use water wisely to ensure that there is enough for everyone in years to come. Water saving habits started now will become a way of life for the future.

  1. Fitting a save-a-flush (a bag of harmless crystals) in your toilet cistern can save up to one litre per flush. That’s a saving of 2,000 litres per person, per year
  2. Shower instead of bath. This could save 300 litres a week – but beware that power showers use a lot more water than normal ones
  3. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. This will save six litres a minute.
  4. Fix leaking taps. Each one that drips wastes 140 litres every week.
  5. When buying a new dishwasher, choose one that is energy efficient as this will save water and electricity.
  6. Wait for a full load before using the washing machine – a full load uses less water than two half loads.
  7. Cool water in the fridge means you don’t have to run the tap for ages to get a cold drink.
  8. Don’t fill the kettle right up to make one cup of tea, try to use just what you need.
  9. If you have a garden, think about getting a water butt. This collects rain water that can be used on your plants and lawn.
  10. Most L&Q homes have lagged pipes, which protects them from freezing and bursting in cold weather. If your water pipes are not lagged, let us know and we will see about fitting lagging.
