One of our most successful initiatives has been Streetlife FM, a groundbreaking community radio station that has really caught the imagination of young people in Waltham Forest, a borough of North East London.
It is run by Team Leyton, an arm of L&Q, and gives young people training in all aspects of radio and offers them a platform to raise issues of concern for them and debate them with live on-air discussions and interviews.
Community barriers have already been broken down with people from rival estates working together on programmes that have been broadcast online, and the station was recently given a two-week FM licence, which gave the budding DJs a chance to broadcast live on the airwaves alongside stations like Radio One and Kiss.
Scores of young people have got involved in Streetlife FM already and here is what some of them have had to say about the experience in their own words.
Brenda
“I have been with the radio project for about a year now. I got involved because I studied A-level media and my teacher thought it would be something interesting for me to get involved in, which it has been.
“I have learnt administration skills, organisational skills, and basic broadcasting skills. These will be invaluable assets towards my future prospects and I hope to go on and work in radio journalism or production.”
Alex
At present, I am unsure about my future, but while attending Streetlife FM and becoming involved in the various training sessions available I know I have gained a plethora of skills that will be useful to me whether or not I decide to go into the media industry and far beyond.
Nikolai
I’ve been with the project now for six months after hearing about Streetlife FM from a college friend. I also do an audio course at college so I thought it would help my college work. Streetlife FM will give me valuable experience and the appropriate skills for hopefully a career in radio. I think Streetlife FM is a great project because it brings together the community and gives young people like myself the opportunities to do something good.”
Zahara
“At the first meeting I had with them, the Streetlife FM team they were very helpful and made me feel like I was already part of the team.
“It’s been a few months now and I’ve gone through presenting training with Geoff Schumann, the BBC radio presenter, and I know how to produce and present my own shows. I can also use the control desk efficiently.
“The experience has been brilliant and it has improved my job prospects even more than the degree I did in music industry management!”
