Nearly 150 residents offered help into training and employment

South Neighbourhood's neighbourhood investment team has contacted nearly 150 new residents since April to offer them help into training and employment.

Tackling worklessness amongst our residents is vital to improving their quality of life and South Neighbourhood is now offering help with this to all new residents as a matter of course.

For example, like many of our residents, Mandy had been unemployed for some time and was really keen to get back to work, but lacked confidence and was concerned about losing her benefits.

Mandy contacted Maud Gambier Ellis in the neighbourhood investment team, who helps residents find local training and employment opportunities. With Maud’s encouragement, she took some short courses and eventually a gardening course with Capel Manor College. Through the course Mandy got a volunteer placement near her home, and Maud advised her to contact the benefit agency for information on paid part-time work.

Mandy – pictured in Warwick Gardens, Pimlico - is now working part-time for Warwick Square Garden Company, feeling valued, and is better off by over £60 a week.
Mandy said of Maud’s help: “I found all the information and help I received excellent, especially on returning to work after a long absence.”
