A man was injured in a gas explosion that took place in a first floor flat at Dukes Place, Laindon, near Basildon at around 5am this morning. The man was taken to hospital but it is understood his injuries are not life-threatening.
The blast destroyed most of his flat and caused serious damage to the three neighbouring properties in the same block.
Police, Fire and Utilities crews attended, and representatives from London & Quadrant, owners of the building and Outlook Care who manage the tenancies were on the scene to help out.
Quadrant Supported Living Group Director Paul Kingsley said: "This explosion was the worst I have seen, and it was a miracle that the occupant wasn't killed, and that there were no other injuries. The statutory services all acted very efficiently, and the occupants of the three damaged properties were offered hotel accommodation, but are staying with relatives. We'll be working closely with Outlook Care to find temporary properties for the three tenants who have had to leave their unsafe homes."
An investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway. Police have apparently ruled out a criminal motive.
