Councillor visits new affordable homes in East Acton

Councillor Adronie Alford visited new homes in East Acton on Saturday to meet residents and officially open the development.

Housing association L&Q Threshold Homes held the opening event to celebrate its creation of 128 homes at Banstead Court, alongside the A40, for people in need of housing. It was attended by H&F cabinet member for housing, councillors and officers as well as organisations involved in the development, and people from the local area.

Councillor Alford says, “The council is delighted with this new and innovative scheme. Thanks to its unique design it is a picture of tranquillity and peace despite being adjacent to the A40. This scheme once again re-affirms our commitment to putting residents first and becoming the true borough of opportunity which is further illustrated by the community centre and training space.”

Sean Fitzsimons, area housing manager at L&Q Threshold Homes, adds: “We’re delighted to be able to deliver affordable housing for local people, using land that had been disused for some time. It’s great to see how well everyone is settling into their new homes and the wider community.”

The official opening was followed by a community event for residents of Banstead Court and the surrounding area. It included information on construction training, digital photography, African drumming and dance workshops and entertainment for children including a puppet show, face-painting and a bouncy castle. There were also pedicabs – cycles with carriages attached – to transport people around.

The homes feature a new system that draws water from deep underground to heat the homes in winter and cool them in summer. It also provides domestic and drinking water for the homes. This means the homes have less impact on the environment and should result in lower energy bills for residents.

The development received £15.4 million in funding from the Housing Corporation. L&Q Threshold Homes worked with organisations including Gardner Stewart Architects, Mansell Construction and Fulcrum to design and build the homes, which were completed in late 2006.
